S'more April Happenings

  • I made cinnamon rolls for the first time for our ward's auction.
  • Sadie started swimming lessons. It's her new favorite thing to do.
She has the greatest teacher ever :)
  • We went to "Evening of the Arts" at the elementary school.
They have the kids' best art projects on display in the hallways, they have the Book Fair in the library, band and strings perform and Emma did a flute duet with her friend Janelle. They also had an "Annie Jr." sneak peak where the kids performed 2 songs. There was LOTS going on and Sadie was really tired and grumpy but fun to see what the kids have been working on.

Besides this frog, Emma had an art project that was chosen out of her class and it was showcased at a local furniture store that puts on a little art show for the families.
  • Sadie had her last day of preschool for this year. And got to go to an end-of-year Bounce U party.
A few more:
  • Our garden is growing and I'll be looking up lots of zucchini recipes soon.
  • We are enjoying every little last bit of this perfect weather we're having.
  • The kids are counting down the days until school's out.
  • Dana signed up for St. George again.
  • We loved watching and learning from General Conference.
  • Last weekend we saw "African Cats" and the kids loved it :)
  • We're hoping things stop needing repairs so we can take a vacation sometime this summer.
  • I got my hair cut just below my shoulders.
  • Emma, Eli, and Holly sang with a group of kids in church on Easter.
  • Emma got her 11 yr shots. she's 50% for height 25% for weight. Such a change from when she was always 90% for height and weight as a little girl. One of her eyes is 20/70 so I need to make an optometrist appointment.
  • Holly is no longer a "Ferocious Lazer Cat". Today was their last game :)
Welcome May!

Easter

In my adult life, I don't know if I've ever felt more anticipation for the arrival of Easter. To finally be free from the grasp of the taunting purple bag of Mini-Eggs is a beautiful thing.
Sadie loves green. She can be dramatic but is overall such a sweet 4 yr-old.
4 dozen eggs minus 3 broken ones.
And they're off! (I feel kinda bad I took way more pictures of Sadie than anyone else. She's just the most excited about things because they're still new for her.)
Scout (always on the lookout for treasures on the ground) was pretty excited about the scattered eggs.

Sadie was excited to find 2 "Elmo" eggs and wanted to share one with Campbell.
A chocolate egg just for me!
Eggs, candy, bunny bread for breakfast.
I didn't do any Easter dresses this year which was kind of a relief not to worry about (once I let it go) since I've been so busy lately. I also taught the Beehives an Easter lesson which I thought turned out pretty well. Except for while I was trying to bear my testimony at the end one girl blew a huge bubble and her neighbor popped it. But with 17 girls there, you roll with the punches :) I feel so lucky to be in YW's- it's such a blessing in my life.

Preparing my lesson I studied the scriptures about Christ's last week. I was struck by how alone he felt. I don't remember learning before how he brought Peter, James, and John with him to the Garden and they kept falling asleep. They couldn't have grasped what he was facing but he was hoping for some type of support. Then he was betrayed by Judas and denied by Peter. Then he felt forsaken by His Father.

My sister Sally put a link on FB to a talk by Elder Holland that says "Because Christ walked such a long, lonely path utterly alone, we do not have to." It's a very inspired talk- you should listen to it.

I hope your Easter was also lovely :)

I'm 36!

For some reason at the beginning of the year when I wrote birthdays on my calendar I wrote "Me-37 Amy-39" on the 16th so it was awesome when I realized I was actually only 36- An extra year of life!
As always, it was a wonderful birthday. Here's the recap:

Amy and I went to breakfast together to the scrumptious "Liberty Market" again this year. This time we stayed under the $10 limit so didn't have to pay anything! We both had kids with fairly early games so we went at 7am. We either look a little tired or a year older. Let's stick with tired.
Cute vases and flowers at the restaurant.
The veggie scramble is divine.
After Holly's soccer game/Eli's baseball practice, Emma was my little birthday buddy and went to get a pedicure with me. She's been doing a lot of babysitting for us and deserved a little reward too.
Plus she makes a really fun birthday buddy.
*I have to add a quick note about her. She does not like wearing more than 1 shirt like this, but when I told her it was time to go she said "just a minute" and got this on. She even added a necklace :) Just for my birthday.
She and Holly also spent a lot of time on a picture for me with 3-D butterflies.
Pretty toes.
Later Amy and I had hot dates to "Joe's Farm Grill" (we're all about the free birthday restaurants).
Then to a play at "Hale Theatre" which was playing "It's Never Too Late." It was kinda like a 70's sitcom but was really funny.

I also got these beautiful flowers from my VT's who are so, so sweet. And Dana wrote me a heart-felt card.
And this is my birthday present to myself...
Did you notice my birthday had accidental turquoise and purple theme colors? Even the electric lights at "Nails of the World"!
Thank you for all the birthday wishes :) I feel so blessed.

Taming the Mama Bear

From the moment you hear your newborns first cry, feel their soft velvety skin, and breathe in their heavenly smell, those synapses are forming. Most definitely by the time the hundredth kiss is lovingly given (on day 1) you know- you will protect this child. You will die for them. You want to give them what they need. You want them to have the best possible life they can. Heavenly Father knew you could be the right mommy for one of His Spirits. You are blessed.

As they grow, it can be difficult to loosen that protective grasp you have on them. When I began to take Emma to playgrounds as a toddler I watched her like a hawk, ready to swoop in and rescue her if I saw she was being hurt by another child. I dreaded taking her to Nursery at church because she cried and cried and I didn't want her to feel abandoned. Those are things every mom has to deal with and after having 4 kids, I've learned to take most things in stride. Inevitably, as they grow up, others will not always see just how special they are. They have to learn to face hard circumstances and grow from them on their own (much easier said than done, at least for me).

This brings me to my reason for the post. I have 1 child that tends to bring out my inner "mama bear". Here are a few 'for instances':
I've mentioned Eli has school struggles. This has resulted in many parent-teacher confer-sations. They are not the glowing reports that the girls usually get. It is not fun and I have to repeat over and over in my mind "You need her to like you, don't yell at her, she cares about him too..." and so forth.

I had an older lady stomp toward me angrily at a splash pad a couple years back demanding that I make my son apologize for knocking her grand-daughter over on purpose. I hadn't seen the incident but I did bring him to apologize which he did through tears. The lady then immediately began to praise my mothering skills (for fulfilling her demands) at which point I told her she needed to watch herself and that she had no right to approach me the way she did. The kids talked about the incident the whole way home calling her "the bad grandma".

Well recently Eli's started baseball for the first time. He's been so excited about it. I coerced Dana into being the teams assistant coach for Eli's sake. It's been stressful for Dana and I feel kind of guilty about it but secretly I'm really happy he's there. I keep telling him- "You can do anything for 6 weeks." (This is the same logic I use with myself at the end of my work-outs so I know it works pretty well). I took him to his first game last week (Dana was on his way from work) and sent Eli into the dugout while I stayed outside to watch. We were the first to arrive so the coach began throwing the ball with Eli. Eli's really been working on his throwing and catching and hitting. Soon I started hearing things like "Come on! Let's see you throw!" "No, no, no catch like this!" You get the point. "Sheez, 'coach Brian', where's the praise?" I thought, and I began feeling my body pulled toward the fence. But then I caught a glimpse of Eli's face and he seemed completely fine. So I stepped back and looked on. And he began to do better.
And even though I was heart-broken that game because Eli struck out twice, he hit a line drive on the second game. And nothing could beat his face when he told me about it through the world's biggest smile.

So even though I know continuing to loosen my grasp over the coming years is going to be very hard, I pray that as I do, the kids will all have times when they grow while mommy left them up at bat...all by themselves.

Of all the motherhood quotes I've ever heard, the one that comes to mind most often is "A mother's role is to be left." When I first heard it, it sounded sad and lonely. But when I thought about it, it rang true. We want our kids to grow up, make great choices and have their own lives. That is the true success of a mother! And that's Heavenly Father's plan for His Spirits we are so privileged to love and protect and also let go of.

Kid Dates

Dana and I have been trying to go out with the kids mano a mano a couple times per month. (Although since Emma's started babysitting we are also enjoying going out with each other on a whim:) (It's awesome I have to say). They are all talkers so we get alot of 411 about their lives. And it's sooo nice to be able to have an uninterrupted conversation.
So here are a couple dates that were captured with the camera.

Eli loves Chinese food so we went to Pei Wei. He wanted Panda but I haven't been back there since the gut bomb of '08 nor do I intend to ever return. Perhaps others have had similar experiences because there was quite a line. I kept asking him if he wanted to go somewhere else but he really wanted orange chicken.
As luck would have it, they don't "have" orange chicken but he ended up happy with noodle-chicken-kids-meal-whatever and we had fun chatting and trying to use chopsticks.
He gave me many thank-you's a hugs :)

Dana took the girls who go to HPE to the daddy-daughter dance. They had lots of fun! He said he had the 2 cutest dates there. But we may not be completely unbiased.
Sadie is up next.
She'd probably appreciate somewhere other than Sprouts or Target :)

So Very Busy

I've been running like a crazy lady. My calendar is full of scribbles that can't find enough room to be entirely legible. With the kids getting older I feel like I'm entering my next phase: the let's set the record for how many times the garage door opens and shuts each day phase.

A quick overview of the kids' activities:
Emma- Annie Jr (Mon & Thurs), Activity Days (Tues), Tennis (Thurs), plus homework and flute practice
Eli- Scouts (Thurs)(exact same time as tennis), Baseball (2 games each week-Mon-Thurs, 1 practice Sat), homework
Holly- Soccer (Mon practice, Sat game)
Sadie- thank goodness only preschool but can't wait for swimming lessons coming up. Oh and both little girls have playgroup together.
Then I have Mutual Wednesdays (as does Dana- we switch off going) and Dana heeded my advice (nagging) to be Ass't Coach for Eli's baseball team. He's been stressed at work the past couple weeks coordinating an event he's in charge of each year. Today was the event and it was such a smash hit he got to come home early.

And he brought little things home for the kids which he does every chance he gets. Today was balloons and cake as it was Best Western's 65th birthday.
(Sadie in her Olvera Street dress)
Me, Dana, Scout, and Sadie walked to pick up the kids from school and then surprised them by telling them we're going to "Ocean Blue".
Then they asked Dana to play "Monster" and they ran around squealing for awhile.

And in some other really great news...guess what these are???
PEACHES!!! It's so exciting.
I love my garden. I even bought a couple gnomes at Target today to keep my herbs company.
